Think a Wedding Dress Sample Sale Isn’t for You? Think Again.

Author: Emma

Say the words “wedding dress sample sale” and I think some brides immediately picture a slightly chaotic room filled with old dresses that nobody wanted. Or that episode of Friends. You know the one…

I can promise you, that isn’t what happens at Maria Modes.

Some of the most incredible gowns in our boutique eventually find their way into our sample sales, and every time we put one together there are dresses the team simply can’t believe I’m letting go!

Yes, there are incredible savings, but what I love most is seeing a bride discover a dress she perhaps never thought would be within reach, put it on and suddenly realise she could be taking it home that very day.

So, with our next Sixpence Sample Sale taking place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th October, I wanted to clear up some of the biggest misconceptions about buying a sample wedding dress. Because if you’ve already decided a sample sale “isn’t really for you”, you might want to reconsider…

“Sample Sale Dresses Are the Ones Nobody Wanted”

This is probably the biggest misconception of all.

Our sample gowns are the very same designer dresses our brides have been trying on during appointments and, in many cases, dresses we absolutely love ourselves.

So why are we selling them? Quite simply, we need the space!

As a destination bridal store with hundreds of wedding dresses, there is always something new arriving at Maria Modes. Designers launch new collections, we choose exciting new gowns for the boutique and eventually we have to make the difficult decision about which of our existing samples will go into the sale.

Sometimes we’re refreshing a particular style, sometimes a new season has arrived, and sometimes we simply have too many beautiful dresses and not enough space in our cabinets to house them all.

Trust me, there are always dresses going into the sale that the team would happily hide from me rather than let me sell!

“They’ll All Be Old-Fashioned Dresses”

Definitely not.

Yes, you may find gowns from previous collections, but bridal fashion doesn’t suddenly expire because a designer launches something new. Beautiful design is beautiful design.

Our October sale includes at least 150 wedding dresses from all of the designers we stock at Maria Modes, so expect everything from timeless elegance and modern silhouettes to incredible fabrics and statement details.

And your wedding photographs aren’t going to have the collection year printed underneath them. Nobody is going to watch you walk down the aisle and think, “Lovely dress, but wasn’t that from the 2025 collection?”

If you put it on and feel incredible in it, that’s what matters.

“If It’s Heavily Reduced, There Must Be Something Wrong With It”

When you see a designer wedding dress reduced by 50%, 60%, 70% or even up to 80%, it’s natural to wonder what the catch is.

Usually, there isn’t one.

The saving is possible because you’re buying our sample gown rather than ordering a brand-new dress to be made especially for you.

Samples have been tried on in the boutique, so some will sometimes show signs of wear. One might need a professional clean, another may have a small mark or need a minor repair, while others are in fantastic condition.

We’ll always be completely honest about any gown you’re considering, and having our own in-house team of experienced seamstresses means we don’t have to guess what might be possible. We can advise on fit, alterations and whether those little imperfections can be easily resolved.

A huge saving is exciting, but we still want you to know exactly what you’re buying and feel completely confident in your decision.

“There Won’t Be Anything in My Size”

Let’s be completely honest about this one.

The dresses in our October sample sale range from approximately a UK10 to a UK20, so we won’t have every style available in every size.

But bridal sizing is very different from high-street sizing, and a sample gown doesn’t necessarily need to fit perfectly when you first put it on. There can be considerably more scope for alteration than brides realise.

This is where having both experienced bridal stylists and our in-house seamstresses is invaluable. We know our dresses, understand their construction and can give you an honest opinion about what can realistically be achieved.

Sometimes a gown can be taken in beautifully. Sometimes there’s scope to let it out. And sometimes we’ll tell you that a particular dress simply isn’t going to work.

We would much rather have that honest conversation than have you dismiss a beautiful gown because of the number on its label.

“Sample Sales Are Only for Brides on a Small Budget”

Absolutely not. In fact, I think this is one of the most overlooked reasons to visit one.

Of course, if you’re working with a tighter wedding dress budget, a sample sale can be an amazing opportunity. But it can be just as exciting for a bride who already has a healthy budget.

Let’s say you’ve allowed £2,000 for your wedding gown. At a sample sale, that same £2,000 might suddenly put a designer gown with an original price of £3,000, £4,000 or even more within reach.

It isn’t necessarily about spending less. Sometimes it’s about what your budget can suddenly buy you.

You might find yourself wearing a designer you had admired but assumed was beyond your budget, or choosing a level of detail, fabric or craftsmanship you hadn’t expected to be able to consider.

And there is something incredibly satisfying about falling in love with an amazing designer gown and then discovering the price tag.

“I Won’t Get the Proper Bridal Experience”

A Maria Modes sample sale is certainly busy. There’s an amazing atmosphere in the boutique and lots happening across the weekend.

But you’re still coming to Maria Modes.

You’re still being looked after by our experienced bridal team, not pointed towards a collection of dresses and left to figure it out yourself.

Our stylists know the gowns, how they fit, what can potentially be altered and which ones you might completely overlook if you were shopping alone. With our seamstresses in-house too, we have years of expertise under one roof when it comes to understanding what can be achieved with a dress.

And because we know our collection so well, we can often listen to what a bride is telling us and think, I know exactly which dress I want her to try.

That part of the Maria Modes experience doesn’t disappear because there happens to be a sale on.

You’re getting an exceptional price, but we still want finding your dress to feel special.

“I’ve Left It Too Late to Find a Designer Dress”

Actually, this is where a sample sale can be one of your best options.

If your wedding is approaching and there isn’t enough time to order a made-to-order gown, a sample dress already exists. There’s no four to six-month production time because the dress is right here in the boutique.

Find the one, buy it and it’s yours.

You’ll still need to allow time for alterations and cleaning where necessary but having access to at least 150 designer gowns available immediately can open up far more choice than you might expect.

So, if you’ve been worrying that you’ve left wedding dress shopping too late, please don’t assume your only option is to compromise. Come and talk to us first.

“I Should Wait Until I’ve Tried Some Other Shops”

You knew I was going to say something about this one!

If you find a dress you absolutely love at our sample sale, please don’t feel that you have to leave it behind simply because you haven’t visited every other boutique on your list.

Sample gowns are one-offs. Once that particular dress has been bought, it’s gone.

That doesn’t mean we want you making a decision you’re unsure about. Our stylists will help you look at the dress properly, talk through the fit, condition and alterations and give you the space to decide whether it really is your dress.

But if you’re standing in front of the mirror feeling amazing and the only thing stopping you is the thought that you’re somehow supposed to visit another three shops first, ask yourself why.

At Maria Modes, you have hundreds of wedding dresses, leading designers and hugely experienced stylists all under one roof. We’ve deliberately created the boutique this way so brides can experience genuine choice without spending weeks driving from shop to shop.

Sometimes you really can find the one sooner than you expected. And that’s a good thing.

And Then There’s the Sixpence…

Of course, we couldn’t just hold an ordinary sample sale.

Hidden inside six of the wedding dresses in our Sixpence Sample Sale will be a lucky sixpence.

Choose one of those six gowns and your wedding dress is completely free.

Yes, really.

You won’t know which dresses contain them. We don’t know which brides will find them. And that’s what makes the weekend so much fun.

Seeing a bride realise she’s not only found her wedding dress but is taking it home without paying a penny never gets old.

So, Is a Wedding Dress Sample Sale for You?

If you love beautiful designer wedding dresses, are open-minded about what you might find and like the idea of getting considerably more from your budget, I certainly wouldn’t rule it out.

You don’t need to be a “sample sale bride”, you don’t need to be shopping on a tiny budget, and you definitely don’t need to compromise on the experience.

Our Sixpence Sample Sale is simply an opportunity to find an incredible designer wedding dress, with the help of the same Maria Modes stylists who look after our brides every week, at a price that might genuinely surprise you.

And if you’ve been watching from the sidelines thinking, “It’s probably not for me…”

Come and see. Your dress might be waiting here already. And who knows? There might even be a sixpence hiding inside it.
